Aging Dams in the world

A United Nations University named ‘Institute for Water, Environment, and Health (UNU-WEH) released a report on aging dams globally. The report ‘Ageing Water Storage Infrastructure: An emerging Global Risk’ states that aging dams are becoming a global issue as they pose threats to human and environmental safety.

Key Finding

Worldwide over 10,000 dams have reached or exceeded the ‘alert’ age limit of 50 years, and some of them have served the purpose for almost 100 years.

Among the 10,000 dams, more than 11%, i.e., 1115 large dams, are situated in India.

Over 32,500 dams are situated in only 4 Asian Countries – India, China. Japan and South Korea.

Global Dams facts

93 % of the world’s largest dam is situated in 25 nations.

The last 40 years have seen a declining tradition of construction of Large Dams.

Numerous sources suggest that the average life expectancy age of large dams is 50 years. The decommissioning should be done because of the maintenance cost, public safety, sedimentations at the reservoir bed, and natural river ecosystem restoration.

Facts about India

Over 4250 large dams in India will be more than 50 years old in the year 2050, 64 will be 150 years of age (Mullaperiyar Dam, built-in 1895 around the earthquake-prone zone).

Since the 1970s, extensive dam construction has been slowed down. Still, India possesses the highest current dam construction rate.
