World Television Day 2020

On 21st November, the United Nations’ World Television Day is observed to recognise the impact of television on economic and social issues.

Background:

The United Nations General Assembly chose the date 21st November to start the first World Television Forum on the 21st and 22nd November 1996 by the United Nations.

Research:

According to a study, television will rise from 1.63 million in 2017 and 1.74 billion in 2023.

About Television:

John Logie Baird invented the television in 1924. It is one of the modes of communication to spread information to a large audience and to frame public opinion.

Television in India:

The daily transmission in television started in 1965 as part of the All India Radio. The first television in India was started in 1959 in Delhi at the studio. Until 1975, 7 cities acquired television.

 

 

National Newborn Week from November 15 to 21

The National Newborn Week is celebrated from November 15 to November 21. It is to increase awareness about the importance of newborn care. It is also to reduce the newborn mortality rate in India. The concept was found by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

National Newborn Week 2020:

The theme of National Newborn Week 2020 is “Quality, Equity, Dignity for every newborn at every health facility and everywhere”.

On 28th November 2020, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Dr Harsh Vardhan Shringla chaired the event. He released a detailed progress card on Indian Newborn Action plan (INAP), its targets and plans.

Besides, he also launched the National Newborn Week IEC posters. He also released Newborn Stabilisation Unit and Newborn Care Corner, two training module.

About INAP:

The Indian Newborn Action Plan was launched at the 67th World Health Assembly in June 2014. India became the first country with this launch for newborn care. It is for women’s and children’s health.

Its target is to reduce newborn deaths, with around 10% of 1000 live births by 2030.

 

 

Approval of $50 Million policy-based loans to boost West Bengal’s Digital platforms for Public Finance Reforms

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved $50 Million policy-based loans.

Objectives:

It is to help in improving West Bengal’s digital platforms for Public Finance Reforms. It will help to improve operational efficiencies, planning, and management in West Bengal. It will integrate the financial and information systems to strengthen the delivery of public services and to generate fiscal savings.

About the policy-based loan:

The loan helps to improve the management of social protection benefits. It stands on the past ADB policy-based programs in 2012 and 2017.

ADB policy-based programs in 2012 and 2017:

The past programs helped in developing and implementing IFMS. It established e-Governance systems to improve revenue administration. Moreover, it enhanced the involvement of the private sector in service delivery.

 

 

Successful testing of “zero-emission e-mobility.”

The Indian Oil Corporation Ltd notified that it has successfully conducted the study on “zero-emission electric mobility” at its fuel station in Bangalore, Karnataka. It will allow the electric vehicle (EV) to charge by using solar power as well as ensuring zero emissions.

About EV Charging System:

Hygge Energy designed the EV charging system. It is a startup by Tech Mahindra. Its features include charging with solar power, no upgrade required, and improved grid resilience in remote areas.

The seismic survey in Mahanadi on land basin launched by OIL

Oil India Limited (OIL) has launched the Rs 220 crore seismic survey program in Mahanadi online basin at Kakatpur in Puri district, Odisha. It aims to store oil and gas in Indian basins.

OIL had won 5 blocks that are spread in 11 districts of Odisha. It is awarded a total of 25 blocks with the honour of the second-largest winner of exploration blocks under OALP.

About OALP:

Open Acreage License Policy (OALP) was launched in June 2017.

 

 

Solar Capacity Addition with a fall of 80% in Q2FY21

According to the report by Mercom Communications India, the solar capacity of India has undergone the fall of 80% in Q2FY21. On September 30, 2020, the total solar installed capacity of India was at 37.4 Gigawatt.

MNRE proposes Wind-Solar Hybrid Park Scheme in States

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has proposed the scheme- “Development of Wind-Solar Hybrid Park”. It aims to address the issues that occurred during renewable energy projects.

The states will prepare the infrastructure for project developers under the plug-and-play model.

Highlights:

The sites have been identified in 7 States. The capacity of each part should be around 500 MW. MNR provides Rs 25 lakh per park to DPRs and Rs 30 lakh per MW to the park developer.

The power generation capacity of India is 373 GW, in which 62% are thermal power plants.

 

 

IMO: India’s IRNSS recognised as the part of WWRNS; India, the 4th nation in the world with Independent Navigation System

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has recognised the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) as the component of the World Wide Radio Navigation System (WWRNS). Thus, India has become the fourth country in the world with an independent regional navigation satellite.

India is followed by the United Nations, Russia, and China. The approval was done during the meeting held from November 4 to November 11, 2020.

Importance of approval:

DGA initiated the matter with the IMO. Now, at least 500 merchant vessels in Indian waters can use IRNSS.

About Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS):

ISRO developed IRNSS. Its objective was to implement a regional spaceborne navigation system. It consists of a constellation of 8 satellites and a ground segment.

India’s Param Siddhi with 63rd rank in Top500 list of most powerful non-distributed computer systems in the world

India’s Supercomputer-PARAM Siddhi-AI ranked 262 in the list of Top500 most powerful non-distributed computer systems in the world. The top 500 project rankings get published twice a year.

About Pratyush and Mihir:

Pratyush ranked 77 in the top100 and Mihir ranked 145 in the list of Top 500 supercomputers.

Key points:

The first 100 cities were dominated by the USA, Japan, France, Germany, and Italy. 212 systems of China were in the list followed by 113 of the US and 34 of Japan.

 

 

The partnership of UNICEF India, FIGO, FOGSY, and three others to strengthen Poshan Abhiyaan

6 organisations have partnered to strengthen the implementation of the POSHAN Abhiyaan. The organisations are UNICEF India, International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), Alive and Thrive, Pregnancy and Obesity Nutrition Initiative (PONI), Nutrition International, and ARTIST for Her.

Objectives:

The objective of the Poshan Abhiyan is to improve nutritional outcomes for pregnant women, children, and mothers.

Andhra Pradesh at the top:

Andhra Pradesh is at the top of the implementation of the scheme in the country. It provided smartphones to 55679 anganwadi workers.

 

 

Willow Warbler for the first time in India

Willow Warbler has been recently sighed for the first time in India in Kerala at Vellayani Punchakkari paddy fields.

About Willow Warbler:

The scientific name of Willow Warbler is Phylloscopus trochilus. It comes under the longest migrating small birds. During early winter, it migrates to sub-Saharan Africa.

Its IUCN red list status is Least Concern.

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and Steel has laid the foundation of 50 LNG fuelling stations across the golden quadrilateral and National Highways.

About LNG:

Liquid Natural Gas is almost 40% cheaper than diesel. It causes very less pollution.

 

 

Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System Project

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, The New Development Bank and The National Capital Region Transport Corporation Limited has signed the loan agreement of $500 million for the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System Project.

About the project:

It is 15.2 km long. The Rapid Transit System will enhance the efficiency of the public transport system, the National Capital Region.
